Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream review

My lack of posts has everything to do with my lack of time. I'm at school always, usually I get up around 6 am and I'm home by 7 pm. I'm not a star at getting up early but I'm still pretty vain, so I wear a full face of make up every day. However, some things just take up too much time. My face routine just cost me too much time, so I found myself reaching for BB cream instead. Because the BB cream that I was using wasn't exactly my own (I stole it from my sister), I decided to try one myself.

I've always been pretty positive about Maybelline's skin cosmetics (their shade range is terrible though) so that's why I purchased this one.

First off, this packaging isn't something I'm proud to have on my desk. It looks childish and silly and they're probably marketing towards a younger audience. It all looks pretty cheap and I don't have anything positive to say about it.

As with all BB creams, it's supposed to do all the things. According to Maybelline it's supposed to:

  • Create a natural glow
  • Compliment skin tone
  • SPF 30 sun protection
  • Hydrate all day
  • Blur imperfections
  • Be oil free and non-greasy
  • Look visibly smooth
  • Feel fresh
And all that within a gel-based formula. More about that, the formula doesn't feel very gel-like. To me, it has the texture and feel of a moisturizer. I think that's not a bad thing at all, gel formulas sometimes creep me out and they're harder to blend sometimes. Once you apply it to the face you can easily blend out the thinnest layer you want.

The coverage of this product is minimal, sometimes I can't even see any difference (but that might have something to do with the fact that it's almost always still dark when I do my make up). However, coverage is easily buildable. The product blends very well so you can just apply another layer on the areas you want more coverage on. Maybelline claims that the product is very hydrating and that it can be worn without a moisturizer. I don't think you should skip on moisturizer, ever, so I haven't tried that. My skin is very dry so I didn't feel a huge difference after applying this. However, it doesn't feel more dry either.

Let's take a look how it looks on the face.

I did not just dye my hair and my neck is not blue you're imagining that
The top photo is me with no make up and the bottom one is me with the Maybelline Fresh BB cream. You can see that my skintone is more even, but it's very subtle. My face also looks a little 'blurred' in the second picture. That's already 2 out of 8 of the points! Does this mean that this product actually does what it promises? Let's find out.

  • Natural glow? Check!
  • Compliment skin-tone? Check!
  • SPF 30 sun protection? Probably?
  • Hydrates all day? Not so sure
  • Blurs imperfections? Check (but don't expect miracles here.. you'll need concealer for that)
  • Oil free and non-greasy? Check!
  • Looks visibly smooth? Check!
  • Feels fresh? Kind of
That's a pretty neat score. Let's take a look how this looks with a full face of make up.

Don't dye your hair in the shower, kids. Especially not if you're using blue dye.

Especially here you can see that the BB cream gives you that fresh glow. In this picture I'm wearing the BB cream, under-eye concealer, powder, the slightest contour and some blush. I like that my natural skin tone shines through this product.

All in all I'm really pleased with this BB cream, it does what it's supposed to do. I don't consider this product a 'Holy Grail' (yet) and I don't know if I would repurchase. However, if you're looking for a low coverage BB cream and your skin tone is within Maybelline's (ridiculous) shade range, check this out.
