Tried & Tested: Castor Oil For Longer Lashes?

A few weeks back I was browsing oils, just because I'm a skincare nerd now (more about that later, possibly). I came across a bottle of castor oil, the oil that's known to stimulate hair growth. As a person that prefers to wear falsies because I hardly have any lashes, I was intrigued. Looking online I found mixed reviews as to whether it works or not, so the only logical thing to do was to try it myself. For one month I applied the miracle oil to my lashes before bed.

Castor oil is a vegetable oil which is often used in soaps and hair products. It's also often the main ingredient of those eyelash serums. It's perfectly safe to apply this stuff to your eyelashes (at least that's what the internet told me!) but you have to be aware of a few things.

  • First, when you're choosing your castor oil make sure you get the 100% natural oil stuff. It's not even that expensive so make sure there aren't any weird artificial ingredients in it.
  • Secondly, when you're applying this to your lashes you'll probably think 'the more the better'. That is not true, you'll get it in your eyes and that is what causes irritation and eye infections. I read online about people trying to use this stuff for longer lashes and ended up getting an eye infection, that's probably because you're not supposed to get it in your eye.
  • Now we're on the infection subject, wash your hands before you apply it to you lashes. You can also use an old mascara wand to apply it but just wash it for the love of dog.

My way of applying it is to use my finger as a mascara wand. I apply a tiny drop to my finger and just blink a few times to get it on my lashes.

Now the main question, has it been worth it? Let's take a look at my lashes before the castor oil experiment.

As you can see my before lashes are quite sparse, not too long or thick. Nothing special as we'd say.

Is it just me or do my lashes look fuller? And longer? And more? I think so! In the third week of using I started noticing difference. Not only did my lashes look longer, they also felt stronger. I think that's the biggest difference, they feel much stronger. I'm also very sure that there's noticeable growth.
Especially with applying mascara I felt a difference. Here's a side-to-side comparison with makeup.

I definitely think there's a difference! In the after picture you can definitely see my lashes are longer and fuller. By the way I used the same mascara in both pictures of course. Now, to conclude here's side-to-side comparison pictures without makeup again.

The other day I definitely knew there was something different because my friend pointed out how long my lashes were. She bought this stuff right away. I'm very glad that this has worked for me! I know that it doesn't work for everyone but I definitely recommend checking it out. If it doesn't work for you, you can always add the oil to your hair masks as it stimulates hair growth everywhere.
I'm gonna continue this and in a month I'll write a follow up. I'm going for those Rapunzel-length lashes!

  • Have you tried castor oil for hair growth?
  • What's your favourite mascara, since mine in the makeup pictures obviously sucks?
