NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream Amsterdam

The beauty blogging world is driven by hypes, no matter if you like them or not. Most of this years' hypes are all about that Instagram aesthetic. Usually that's a full face of makeup including;  perfectly contoured skin, winged eyeliner, strobing, fleeky eyebrows and of course, liquid lipstick. I feel quite ashamed that I don't own any matte liquid lipsticks, until now. I decided to dip my toes into the world of liquid lipsticks (not.. literally, although that would be cool). Introducing the beauty bloggers fave; NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream.

In my first empties post I talked about my beloved Rimmel Red Fever lipstick. After featuring it as empty I've been scraping the insides to my face for quite a while until it really, really ran out. When I couldn't find a new one in my local drugstore I went on a quick searching spree online and I.. found out... that... it'd... been.. discontinued. I, mature that I am, took the news very lightly.

And after a couple of weeks I decided it was time to Move On and I ordered one of the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream. Everyone else seems to love them so why wouldn't this be the perfect replacement? Could this be?

The Soft Matte Lip Cream currently comes in 22 (Taylor Swift™ No copyright infringement.) shades. Amsterdam is described as a 'true red'. On camera the colour leans a little more orange but it's definitely a red in real life.

The lip cream comes in a lipgloss-like tube with a doe-foot applicator inside. The applicator works well for applying it. Regardless of the product I'm using, I always use a lip liner to create sharp outline, so that's what I do with this product too. If you don't use a lip liner it might be difficult to get a clean outline, though. What I do like is that the tube closes really well and unlike other NYX products, this packaging feels sturdy.

The formula is supposed to be matte, long wearing and moisturizing. It does take a little while to dry when you first apply it, but I think that's because this product doesn't contain a quick oxidizing ingredient like alcohol. I personally doesn't mind it drying a little less quickly because alcohol dries out your lips like crazy. When it sets it has a beautiful velvetty finish which I adore.

One of the most important things for me is that this product is supposed to be longwearing. I think it is, but to a certain extent. It does not last through oily meals, but it does a neat job between normal snacks and drinks. Another thing that I really love about this is that it fades quite beautifully! If you don't have time for a touch up, or you're just forgetful, you won't look ridiculous. Now that's a big plus. The formula does allow you to touch up your lipstick, but not too much. You can layer it on 3-4 times but then it will get quite sticky. It doesn't look any different but I just thought that it wasn't a nice feeling. Another thing that I noticed was that this product does leave stains on glasses, usually matte lipsticks don't do that and I really didn't expect this product to do this either.

I don't think of the formula as moisturizing, but it's not drying either. Also, it doesn't look horrible on chapped lips.

Another thing I'm concerned about is how quickly this product will run out. I've never owned any liquid lipsticks but I'm thinking that you get way less product than you'd get with a regular lipstick. And you also have the issue of them drying out. Both of these are issues that I'll probably face later - and you'll probably hear about in a future empties post.

All in all I think it's a pretty neat little product we have here. Especially at this price point it's a really great product, and I'd love to try out more shades. I think it's a good replacement for my old pal Red Fever, because I liked that one too for its longevity and its forgiving fading. Amsterdam also smells way better, it has quite a strong vanilla/cookie scent (which does fade quickly, if you're not into that kind of thing) while Red Fever had a very strong rosy scent (yikes).

PS: if you live in The Netherlands (or some other country in which a terrible, terrible store bought  exclusivity on NYX) you can order these on Ebay, I bought mine from @beautyjoint and I'd highly recommend them (I'm not affilated with them, obviously)
